The Soaring Society of America (SSA, www.ssa.org) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to foster and promote all phases of soaring (gliding) in the US. There are approximately 12,000 members, 500 of those in Pennsylvania. Many are professional pilots or hold power ratings.
The SSA actively works with all levels of government and with other aviation-related organizations to cooperatively and safely share US airports and airspace. Pennsylvania is the home for many club and commercial glider operations: Ridge Soaring (Julian), Fairfield, Beltzville (Lehighton), Kutztown, Morgantown, Van Sant (Erwinna), Hilltown, New Garden (Toughkenamon), Brokenstraw (Pittsfield), Grove City, and Bandel (Eighty Four). Additionally, Mifflin County and Fairfield Airports annually host regional/national soaring competitions during the second half of May. Many world and national record flights have originated from Pennsylvania. Champion and record holding pilots including Karl Striedieck, Tom Knauff, Mark Keene, and Tom Beltz call Pennsylvania home.
